Dr Tilley takes us on a journey from Abraham to the great prophets to bring out the techniques used by the biblical writers and prophets – and in particular the notions of beauty, corruption, and the almighty power of God being made present in the smallest of things in this world.
Author Dr Robert Tilley
Dr Robert Tilley is a lecturer in biblical studies and ancient languages at the Catholic Institute of Sydney and in Christian literature at the Aquinas Academy.
Dr Tilley presents an introduction to the problems of modern biblical criticism and its origins; the notion of beauty and its role in rediscovering the skill and subtlety of the writing of the Scriptures; and an exploration of the structure, journey and context of the Torah.
In the third and final talk of the series: “The Bible and the Mystery of Self Deception”; Dr Robert Tilley looks at what true mystical humility is according to the saints and mystics, the problem with currents of thought about the self such as the “inner journey” and self-malleability, and the dangerous roads down which a lack of true humility will lead.
In the second talk of his amazing series: “The Bible and the Mystery of Self Deception”; Dr Robert Tilley looks at our lies, our self-corruption through complexity to justify these lies, and how the ancient prophets spoke about this problem which has emerged strongly in our current age.
