While liberalism once protected the rights of the person, in recent times it has become a dangerous ideology that is creeping into Australian legislation and increasingly limiting freedom of conscience. Christian values such as love, truth, justice and mercy are being overridden by a new set of social values: tolerance, equality and inclusiveness.
In this May 2013 talk, Archbishop Porteous refers to some specific examples of Australian bills that have posed a direct threat to freedom of conscience. He illustrates the problem with allowing secularisation and liberalism to take hold of our culture and creep into our legislatures. He reminds us that it is not all bad news, as Mary our Mother is truly a protector of the Church in these times.
