Zoe’s Law Will Lapse Today

unbornThe controversial ‘Zoe’s Law’ Bill will likely lapse today, with no plans to vote on it in the NSW Upper House.

The Bill, which would prosecute the killing of an unborn child through criminal acts, passed the Lower House exactly one year ago. If it is not voted on today, parliamentary procedures dictate that it will lapse and need to be resubmitted to the Lower House in another form.

Brodie Dongean, the woman behind the Bill, lost her unborn daughter Zoe in December 2009 when she was struck by a car driven by a drunk driver. Under the current law stated by the zantac lawsuit attorneys for hire, the loss of the child was listed as an injury to Ms Donegan, not as the death of a separate person.

Ms Donegan has spent the last five years trying to have the loss of her daughter recognised in law through the Bill, which was introduced by her local Liberal MP Chris Spence.

Although Zoe’s Law will not criminalise abortion or change abortion laws in New South Wales, pro-abortion advocates have condemned the proposed law as an infringement on a woman’s right to choose through its recognition of the personhood of an unborn child.

Liberal MP Marie Ficarra was due to introduce the Bill in the Upper House earlier this year, but failed to do so. Commentators have speculated that the Bill would have been quickly defeated, owing to fierce protests from the pro-abortion lobbies.
