St Porphyry of Gaza

St Porphyry of Gaza was born near Greece in the middle of the fourth century. He is known for his generosity to the poor and for his ascetic lifestyle. Porphyry was a hermit in Palestine on the bank of the Jordan River. He was ordained as a priest in Jerusalem who went on to became bishop of Gaza. He took on the role with great zeal and devotion. Porphyry worked tirelessly for his people, through instruction he converted many people during the time of paganism. He died in the year 421.
