Runaway Soul: The Postmodern City and Theologies of Escape

1

Pop-culture narratives are filled with references to the theme of escape or running away:  TV shows Prison Break or Walking Dead, films like Thelma and Louise or Chicken Run, and songs such as Bruce Springsteen’s “Born to Run”, Tracey Chapman’s “Fast Car” are just a few examples. What is it about this notion of escape that appeals to us? What can Christian Theology bring to this narrative?

In this talk presented at the 2013 Conference of the Centre of Theology & Philosophy at Oxford University, Dr Matthew Tan correlates the theme of running away with Graham Ward’s work on the postmodern city in Cities of God.
