St Peter Canisius

1

St Peter Canisius was born in 1521 in Nieminen, Netherlands. He was an important Jesuit who fought against the spread of Protestantism in Germany, Austria, Bohemia and Switzerland. The restoration of the Catholic Church in Germany after the Reformation is attributed to his work. Everywhere Peter worked he became a noted preacher, and often worked with children, teaching them and hearing their confessions. He even addressed the Council of Trent on the Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist. Peter died in 1597 in Switzerland and was canonized and declared a Doctor of the Church in 1925 by Pope Pius XI. He is the patron saint of the Catholic press, Germany, and writers of the catechism.
