St Nicholas

2

St Nicholas was born in Asia Minor around the third century. He was the Bishop of Myra (Demre, in Lycia, part of modern-day Turkey). Nicholas is also known as Nikolaos the Wonderworker because of his many miracles that were attributed to his intercession. He had a reputation for secret gift-giving, such as putting coins in the shoes of those who left them out for him, and thus became the model for Santa Claus, whose English name comes from the Dutch Sinterklaas. Nicholas died around the year 346 and is the patron saint of bakers and pawnbrokers.
