St Louise de Marillac

1

St Louise de Marillac was born on the 12th August 1591 in Meux, France. She was known for co-founding the Daughters of Charity with St Vincent de Paul, later to be known as the Sisters of Charity. Many of the young women were illiterate and it was with reluctance that the new community undertook the care of neglected children. Louise was busy helping wherever needed despite her poor health. She travelled throughout France, establishing her community members in hospitals, orphanages and other institutions. St Louise died on the 15th March 1660 in Paris, France and was canonised in 1934 by Pope Pius XI. She is the patron saint of social workers.
