St Gregory the Great was born in Rome about 540 A.D.  Son of Gordianus, a Roman regionarius, and St Silvia of Rome. The name Gregory is a Greek name meaning ‘watchman’. He is known for being the 64th Pope and the first monk to be chosen. During his time he Sent St Augustine of Canterbury and a group of monks to evangelise England as well as reforming the Liturgy of the Mass and Divine Office. He is also known as “the Father of Christian Worship” because of his exceptional efforts in revising the Roman worship of his day. He died of natural causes in 604 and is the patron saint for choir boys.
