St Ephraim of Syria

1

St Ephraim was born around 306 A.D. in Nisibis, Mesopotamia. He was a poet, orator and a defender of the faith. Ephraim is the only Syrian father who is honored as a doctor of the Universal Church. This saint was baptised at the age of eighteen and became well-known as a teacher in his native city. He had a prolific pen, and his writings best illumine his holiness. Ephraim became one of the first to introduce song into the Church’s public worship as a means of instruction for the faithful. His many hymns have earned him the title “Harp of the Holy Spirit.” He died in the year 373 and is the patron saint of spiritual directors.
