Treating Infertility: IVF or Natural Fertility?

There are many narratives in the media singing the praises of IVF as the answer for couples who have had difficulty conceiving – but is IVF all it’s cracked up to be? Can it be compatible with the Christian understanding of life, marriage and family? Is there another path that is being overlooked in efforts to advance the fertility industry?

Bioethics Professor Nicholas Tonti-Filippini from the John Paul II Institute for Marriage and Family in Melbourne says that infertility is a complex issue with a number of contributing factors, many of which can be addressed naturally. In this interview we discuss some of the ethical issues around IVF, as well as the possibilities and benefits of increasing awareness of natural fertility methods.

The John Paul II Institute for Marriage and Family in partnership with the Life, Marriage and Family Centre in Melbourne will be hosting the first National Fertility Conference on 19-21 September.

The Conference will bring together local and international experts in fertility, including representatives from the Australian Council for Natural Family Planning, FertilityCare Centres of Australia and Ovulation Method Research and Reference Centre.
