The scandal of sins by Catholics have been so grievous throughout history that they are used to attack the very validity of the Catholic Church – but Ven. Archbishop Fulton Sheen’s essay Scandals offers an apologetic for the integrity of the Church in spite of the sins of Her members.

    I guess there is a choice of language to be made and word choices nuance the way we understand things. I know we are discussing Catholics discussing Catholic church but don’t you think the phrase ‘the scandal of sin’ sounds like we are trying to soften and obscure the fact that we are often referring to ‘human rights abuses’ and ‘heinous crimes’ and sometimes as an act of penitence we really need to name sin in a more brutally honest way?
