Bruce you are spot on in saying that a key problem is indifference to God and His lack of relevance to people. A lot of people I know seem to have the view that religion is unnecessary and burdensome; why need God when things are going Ok in my life?
Its a tough nut to crack this one, because when God is irrelevant and pushed to the outer edges of everyday life, then He is never discussed. I have frequently experienced the mindset from people when I talk about my faith, that God is seen as an equally fictitious character as Santa Claus. At least with declared atheists you can have an intelligent conversation about the existence of God.
