St Francis of Paola

1

St Francis of Paola was born on the 27 March 1416. He was known for his deep love for contemplative solitude as well as a miracle-worker. Francis was the founder of the Hermits of St Francis of Assisi, but he changed the name of his community to “Minims” because he wanted them to be known as the least (minimi) in the household of God. Francis enjoined upon his followers to a perpetual Lenten fast. He began to use the gifts of miracles and prophecy, to minister to the people of God. Francis died on 2 April 1507 in France and was canonised by Pope Leo X in 1519. He is the patron saint of sailors.
