St Teresa Benedicta of the Cross (Edith Stein) was born on 12 October 1891 in Berslau, Germany. She was born into a Jewish family and was later baptised a Catholic. Teresa was a Carmelite nun who was a profound philosopher and a brilliant writer. She had a great influence on the women of her time and an inspiration to all Christians whose heritage is the Cross, and her life was offered for her own Jewish people in their sufferings and persecutions.  Her Jewish background led to her arrest by the Nazis and held in a Concentration Camp. St Theresa died in the gas chamber in Auschwitz on the 9 August 1942. She was canonised by St John Paul II in 1998 and she is the patron saint of converted jews.
