St Anthony Zaccaria

St Anthony Zaccaria was born in 1502 in Italy. From an early age, he took a private vow of chastity. He studied medicine and received his doctorate at the age of 22. Anthony Worked as a physicians to the poor in Cremona, Italy and he felt called to the religious life. He bequeathed his inheritance to his mother, worked as a catechist, and was ordained at age 26; legend says that angels were seen around the altar at his first Mass. The saint was greatly inspired by St Paul (his congregation is named the Barnabites, after the companion of that saint)that he preached with great vigor in church and street, conducted popular missions and was not ashamed of doing public penance. While on a mission of peace, he became seriously ill and was brought home for a visit to his mother. He died at Cremona on the 5 July 1539. He was canonised in 1897 by Pope Leo XIII.
