Ss Peter and Paul

This feast day of Ss Peter and Paul commemorates the martyrdom of the two great Apostles, assigned by tradition to the same day of June in the year 67. They had been imprisoned in the famous Mamertine Prison of Rome and both had foreseen their approaching death. Saint Peter was crucified; Saint Paul, a Roman citizen, was slain by the sword. Peter was a professional fisherman and the brother of Andrew. He is known as the ‘rock’ by Jesus to indicate that Peter would be the foundation of the Church. Paul was a Pharisee who persecuted Christians before his conversion at Damascus. he would go on to spread the Good News by travelling, preaching and teaching. He wrote many letters to the Church which are found in the New Testament.
