St Columban around 559. He was an Irish missionary notable for founding a number of monasteries on the European continent. Columban stands as an exemplar of Irish missionary activity in early medieval Europe. As a young man who was greatly tormented by temptations of the flesh, he sought the advice of a religious woman who had lived a hermit’s life for years. He died around 615 and is the patron of motorcyclists.
