Pope St Damasus I was born around 305 in present day Portugal. He is well-known for being the Pope of the Catholic Church from 366 to 384. Damasus contributed greatly to the liturgical and aesthetic enrichment of the city churches in Rome, making it more socially acceptable for upper classes to convert to Christianity. He also guided the Church through a period of great difficulty. Damascus died in 384 and is the patron saint for archeologists.
