St Marianne Cope was born in Germany in 1838. She is well-known for working with lepers in Hawaii. Following the death of her father, she entered the religious order of the Sisters of the Third Order Regular of Saint Francis in New York. Following her formation, she became a teacher and later on, a principal of immigrant children. After she became Superior General of her order, Marianne managed a hospital in Hawaii for victims of leprosy. She was a hard-worker who devoted her life to helping the sick. Marianne died in 1918 and was canonised a saint by Pope Benedict XVI in 2012. She is the patron saint of lepers, outcasts and those with HIV/AIDS.
