Blessed Jacopone de Todi

0

Blessed Jacopone de Todi was born a noble member of the Benedetti family in the northern Italian city of Todi. His young wife took it upon herself to do penance for the worldly excesses of her husband. When she died of an accident and realised that the penitential girdle she wore was for his sinfulness, Jacopone vowed to radically change his life. He divided his possessions among the poor and entered the Secular Franciscan Order and lived a life of strict penance. He is known for writing several laudi songs in Italian. Jacopone died in 1306.
