St John of the Cross

St John of the Cross was born in 1542 in Fontiveros, Spain. He is well-known as the mystical doctor of the Church. His writings on the soul united with God in prayer reveal the most profound mystical expressions, experiences and insights ever imagined. The writings of this Carmelite saint are the most profound, literary masterpieces both in his gorgeous prose and poetry. He died in 1591 and was later canonised in 1726. He was proclaimed a Doctor of the Church by Pope Pius XI in 1926 and is the patron saint of a contemplative life.
