St Francis Xavier


St Francis Xavier was born in 1506. He is known as the founder of the Society of Jesus and the first missionary Jesuit. He spent ten years doing missionary work in India, the East Indies and Japan, baptising 40,000 converts. While in India in the city of Goa, Francis preached in the street, worked for the sick and taught children their catechism by walking through the streets and ringing the bell to call children to their studies. most of his travelling was done on a boat and by foot. Francis died in 1552 after getting a fever while doing missionary work. he was canonised in 1622 and is the patron saint of missionaries.
