St Peter González, sometimes referred to as Pedro González Telmo, Saint Telmo, or Saint Elmo, was born in 1190 in Astorga, León, Spain. He is well known for being a Dominican priest who protected captives and sailors as well as being a preacher to the poor. Peter Gonzalez died on the 15 April 1246. He was beatified by Pope Innocent IV in 1254, however he was never canonized formally. Only his cult (those who venerated him as a holy person) was confirmed by Pope Benedict XIV in 1741. He is the patron saint of sailors.
