Blessed Sebastian of Aparicio

1

Blessed Sebastian of Aparicio was born in La Gudina, Orense, Spain on the 20th January 1502. He is well-known for building a 466 mile (750 kilometres) road from Mexico City to Zacatecas and conducting the postal and delivery service along that route. The road is still in operation today. Sebastian lived a simple, wealthy life and he freely gave his money away to the poor. Sebastian became a Franciscan at the age of 72 and spent the remaining years of his life begging alms for his fellow Franciscans. He died in the year 1600 at the age of 98. Sebastian was beatified by Pope Pius XI in 1789 and is the patron saint of drivers, road builders and travellers.
